How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista?

Question To begin with, I am not totally literate when it comes to knowing what goes on "inside." I would like to know if it is possible to partition two different operating systems on the same computer. I am using Windows XP, but I would like to try Vista. I have heard good and bad things about it, so I'm reluctant to dispose of XP unless I'm convinced that I really like it. Can you please give me some detailed directions as to how I can accomplish this? Thank you.

Answer
it's not only possible but it is done VERY often. But you may need to get some help in actually doing it.

What you want is called "dual boot" (or, for more than two OS', "multi-boot"). As long as you are doing no more than two OS, you can do it with just the OS' (e.g. software on the OS CDs), providing that you can repartition your hard drive into [at least] two partitions; while you can have two OS' on the same hard drive, they generally have to be in separate partitions. If the hard drive is currently fully used (fully partitioned), you may have to do some repartitioning first, so you may need "Partition Magic" or a similar partitioning software. Then you can go after setting up dual boot. The general process is to install the older OS first, then install the newer OS in a separate, blank partition (so you might have XP in C: and Vista in D:).

However, with XP and Vista, there is nasty catch: Due to a conflict between how XP and Vista work, if either Operating System sees the partion containing the other, there will be some corruption of the "other" OS. The most serious consequence of this is that the System Restore function will be lost for both OS', and there may be some other , less serious consequences. The choices basically are to live with this, or to arrange to "hide" the partition containing whichever OS you did not boot into (whenever you reboot you will be given a menu of the two OS' and the chance to select which one to boot up from). If you choose the "hide" approach (probably best), you will need a 3rd party "boot manager" since the Microsoft boot manager doesn't implement this function. If you do a web search for "dual boot" or "boot manager", or similar, you will get a lot of hits that should help you to both select a boot manager (some are free, some are not) and give you instructions for setting things up.

What I usually recommend for people setting up dual boot is this:

-Oldest OS on C:
-Newer OS on D:
-All data for both OS' (including "My Documents") on E:

Setting this up takes some effort to get all the programs installed under either or both OS' to store their data on E: (including making a "My Documents" folder on E: and having both OS' recognize it as THE "My Documents" folder), but it gives you the flexibility to use either OS and see the same data. System Restore won't work on E: if you do this (since both OS' will, by definition, see that partition), but system restore doesn't deal with DATA anyway, it only deals with system files such as drivers and the registry, which won't be on that 3rd data partition.

As to specific instructions, again, that can get pretty lengthy, and the best advice I can give you is to do a web search. There are plenty of sites that do have step-by-step instructions, but the length of the instructions makes it kind of prohibitive to actually put them directly into this post.

Resolving "Setup did not find any hard disk drives" during Windows XP Installation

September 02, 2008

One of the most popular topics among our readers is installing Windows XP on your new Windows Vista computer - sometimes for compatibility reasons, but also because a lot of people just don't like Vista very much.

The problem that people keep running into left and right is getting to the point where XP starts to install and getting the message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". This error happens because your new computer has a storage controller that isn't supported natively in XP, usually an SATA (Serial ATA) controller.

If you don't have a floppy drive in your computer (who does anymore), then you'll need to use a process called slip-streaming to integrate the storage drivers into your XP installation CD.

It should go without saying that this is an advanced topic, so proceed with caution.

Creating a Custom XP Install

We'll use a software called nLite to create a new XP install cd, so you'll first need to download and install it. Once it starts up, you'll be prompted for your Windows installation, so you'll want to click the Browse button.

First you'll be prompted for the "Windows installation", which really means your XP install CD. Find it and select the root of the installation, and then click OK to go to the next dialog.

Next you'll be prompted on where you want to save the temporary files used during the slip-streaming process. I chose to create a new directory and called it XPISO, but you can put it wherever you'd like. I just recommend to use a new directory.

nLite will copy all the necessary files off the XP installation and into the temporary folder. When it's done, you'll see all the information on which version it is.

Hit the next button until you come to this screen, where you can select what options you want. Select "Drivers" and then "Bootable ISO".

Side note: You can select any of the other options if you'd like. nLite will let you bundle updates, set tweaks or automatically remove components from the installation, but that all goes beyond the scope of this article.

Hit the next button until you get to the screen for selecting drivers. If you click the Insert button, you can choose between adding a single driver or adding a folder of drivers. Since we'll just be loading a single driver, you can choose that option, but you might want to first read the section below about finding drivers for XP.

Browse to the directory where you extracted the driver files, and then select Open. Note that it doesn't really matter which of the *.inf files you choose, because it will select all files in the folder anyway.

nLite will prompt you to select your driver. If you don't know which exact one it is, you can either use Device Manager in Vista to find the exact model, or you can just select all of them. Just be careful not to select a 64-bit driver if you are using 32-bit, or the wrong OS version.

I would recommend including both Storage and Network drivers, as those are the most common drivers that are missing in XP.

Once you proceed to the next screen, now we can finally finish the process. You can choose to directly burn the cd here, or you can select Create Image to create an ISO file that you can burn to a CD using whatever burning tool you have.

Note: If you chose to create an ISO, make sure to use the "Make ISO" button before you click Next.

At this point you can burn the ISO image to a CD, and then start your XP installation process.

Finding Drivers for XP

The best place to search for drivers for your hardware is at the manufacturer's support website. The only problem is that almost every manufacturer seems to distribute their drivers in floppy disk image form, even though the computer they are for doesn't have a floppy drive. Guess nobody has alerted them to get with the program.

We can still extract the drivers using an application called WinImage. Let's run through a quick example… Here you can see the Intel SATA controller driver for my HP computer.

I downloaded and ran the executable, which extracted a file called f6flpy32.exe into a temporary directory. Don't bother trying to run this one, because it'll just prompt you for a floppy drive.

So how to get the drivers out of this file? There are a few options that you can try, depending on how the manufacturer packed the files.

* You can use Winimage to extract them, which is a shareware software, but you can use it during the trial period for free.
* You can try and use WinRar to extract the file. In many instances this will extract a *.flp file, which you can mount in a VMware virtual machine or potentially with some ISO mounting software.
* Some drivers will allow you to automatically extract into a directory. You'll have to try it and see what happens.
* Other methods? If you've got other ideas, leave them in the comments and I'll add them to this list.

Here's the list of files that Winimage can handle, which is quite a lot

Start WinImage and then open the file, and you should see the contents. Just extract them to a folder, preferably with a useful name so you can remember it later.

Good luck with your installation, and be sure to leave any .

Water or Nothing?

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT

1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160 ml glasses
of water.
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes.
3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4
glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/ reduce main diseases:
1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days
2. Gastric - 10 days
3. Diabetes - 30 days
4. Constipation - 10 days
5. Cancer - 180 days
6. TB - 90 days
7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.
It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.
This makes sense.... the Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals...not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.
Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

Hacking or Cracking? who u with?

"Cracker - This is the common term used to describe a malicious hacker. Crackers get into all kinds of mischief, including breaking or "cracking" copy protection on software programs, breaking into systems and causing harm, changing data, or stealing. Hackers regard crackers as a less educated group of individuals that cannot truly create their own work, and simply steal other people's work to cause mischief, or for personal gain."

"Hacker - This is someone that seeks to understand computer, phone or other systems strictly for the satisfaction of having that knowledge. Hackers wonder how things work, and have an incredible curiosity. Hackers will sometimes do questionable legal things, such as breaking into systems, but they generally will not cause harm once they break in. Contrast a hacker to the term cracker."

Looks good. These are definitely two different types of people, so I understand why a hacker would get upset at being called a cracker. This is the part that gets me, though: "Hackers will sometimes do questionable legal things, such as breaking into systems, but they generally will not cause harm once they break in." I have a few problems with this.

1. Generally? "He breaks into cars and joyrides, but he generally returns them."
2. Questionable legal things? No, breaking into systems one does not own is unquestionably illegal in the U.S.
3. Even so, let's assume the hacker does nothing illegal. How is a company supposed to know the difference between the hacker and the cracker?

Follow me for a minute here: I own a company, NetNut, and it has a computer connected to the internet. Stored on this computer is my secret data. Rufus T. Wanklehacker wakes up one morning and decides to try to break into NetNut's computer. He finds a security hole and succeeds. After he is done, he restores the computer the state he found it in and reports the security flaw to NetNut, so they can fix it. Across the street, MaCooter Q. Buttcracker is just getting up. He decides he'd like to get a piece of that secret data of mine. So he breaks into NetNut's computer and gets the data. He then restores the computer to the state he found it in, and just in case there are any audit logs he doesn't know about, reports the security hole(s) he found when breaking in. In this way he can claim he is just a harmless hacker and avoid prosecution, so long as no one finds out he looked at secret data.

See where I'm going with this? This is not an implication that all hackers have malicious intent. I'm all for the idea of peer-review, publication of security flaws, open-source, etc. But when a hacker breaks into a live system and wants a company to "take his/her word" that no harm will come of it... please. No harm will come of it if the person is truly a harmless hacker, but why would a company want to take the risk?

My question is this: What does a hacker want from the law? Why should a company, after receiving an email about a security flaw from a hacker who broke in, trust that the hacker did not do anything to harm the company? Why should a legal deterrant not come into effect until the company starts losing money? An analogy: "Stealing cars should not be illegal. The owner of the car should not be able to prosecute until the car is actually sold on the black market." Long story short, a cracker is a malicious hacker (see definition above). Malice is not the most measureable aspect of a person. So until the CIA with its drug tests figures out how to determine the exact level of malice in a person's brain, hackers are going to have to find a more obvious way to differentiate their actions from that of crackers if they expect the law, the media, and the corporations not to come down on them.

"When you have once seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no vocation but to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him; and you are torn by the thought of the unhappiness and night you cast, by the mere fact of living, in the hearts you encounter."

Quotes for wisdom

August 17, 2008

"Whatever you do, you need courage.
Whatever course you decide upon,
there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong.
There are always difficulties arising that
tempt you to believe your critics are right.
To map out a course of action and follow it to
an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs.
Peace has its victories,
but it takes brave men and women to win them."

"It takes a lot of courage
to release the familiar and seemingly secure,
to embrace the new.
But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.
There is more security in the adventurous and exciting,
for in movement there is life,
and in change there is power."
